Show Tunes in LA

June 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I just returned home from a long trip to Colorado and LA. Colorado had to do with speaking in my home church, seeing family and attending the Vision Nationals Board Meeting in Colorado Springs. It was really cool to be home. I always love sitting in my living room with a hot cup of tea, searching the San Juan Mountains with my eyes to see if I can find something I’ve never seen before. I always can. This winter Ridgway got a record amount of snow, so all the mountains are still covered in white which exentuates the purple rocks that jut out to make couloirs.

From Colorado I traveled with my family to LA, not for Vision Nationals but for a family reunion on my mom’s side. This was the first time in years that all the kids and grandkids were together. We had so much fun eating our favorite popsicles, making sopa tarrasca, and singing show tunes at the top of our lungs. My Uncle Ron provided the music with his mad sightreading skills on the piano, and all the women in the family took advantage of his talent for a full hour! The climax was our passion filled rendition of “Take My Breath Away” from Top Gun! What a family!

Praise Jesus for his grace to me that I should have been born into such a family. It’s amazing for me to look back on it and realize that I am who I am today because of all that has been poured into me by these amazing people. God is good.

All Grown Up and a Manatee

I just rented my first car. I turned 25 last week and really felt old for the first time as I signed the papers to drive away from the Orlando Airport in a shiny Chevrolet Something-or-Other. (I’m very unobservant when it comes to cars). It was super fun! I met Arjuna in Ft. Myers and we visited lots of churches, met with pastors and talked to people for a whole week. It’s been pretty amazing to learn from him and begin the networking process that will hopefully bring about long-term relationships between VN and churches here in the States.

I really do love talking about ministry!

On Memorial Day we got to go out on a little fishing boat with the family we were staying with. The day before their 10 year old son had caught a 3-foot hammer head shark. Seriously. But we weren’t able to go out into deep water due to high winds. So we got to stay cozy in the canals and fish for other things. We didn’t really catch anything, but we did see lots of fish jumping. “Those are vegetarian fish”, they explained to me, “they won’t take our bait.” (Which happened to be little shrimps on a hook.)

The best part of the whole day, though, was when we saw a family of manatee right next to our boat!!! I’ve always wanted to see a manatee since the release of Veggie Tales wonderful song “Barbara Manatee”. And this was the day for it! These very ugly “sea cows” are the funniest looking creatures I have ever seen. But I really really love their little whiskery noses that poke out of the water to breathe. I wish I had pictures, but my camera broke. :)
